PANJIM: The Cyber Crime cell of Goa police has appealed to the people not to download fake loan apps and fall prey to the devious tactics of such loan app companies.
As part of its ongoing cyber awareness campaign, SP (Cyber Crime) Rahul Gupta, IPS, in a video message said that Loan App fraud is another kind of fraud that is going on across the country. Some mobile applications get listed where they assure to offer cheap loans without any rate of interest. Those who are in dire need of money fall prey to such kind of Loan App and download them thereby giving access to your data. By then the Loan App companies are in possession of all your data.
SP Gupta said that “After two to three days these Loan App companies start calling you and all your contact numbers stating that your friend, your son and relative had taken loan from our company and we have to recover it and that he had given your number. These companies will call you everyday two to three times and mentally harass you and you will be forced to give some money in return. There are many instances where people in order to get rid of such kind of calls, pay money to the fraudsters starting from Rs 10,000 onwards.”
The Loan App companies might also use your photos and videos by morphing them and making some obscene content and again start torturing and extorting money from you. They will also threaten you that they will leak/upload your photos on social media or to the public if you don’t give them money.
SP Gupta has appealed to the people not to fall into the trap of cheap loans and always to verify whether the Loan App is genuine. If you download Loan App it asks lot of permissions then you have to be cautious. There is no Loan App which requires access to your photos, he said.
