At a time when the resolution to include the Romi script of Konkani was defeated in the ongoing Goa Assembly session, the enduring presence and cultural strength of Romi Konkani was powerfully demonstrated on stage in Gujarat.

Recently, the award-winning tiatr Daddy’s Home, written by Fr Milton Rodrigues, celebrated its silver jubilee show in Ahmedabad, receiving a heart warming response from the local Konkani-speaking community. The tiatr, written in the Romi script, has made a mark in the Konkani theatre scene, having won first place at the Kala Academy’s prestigious 49th Tiatr Competition.

The silver jubilee performance in Ahmedabad marked the 25th show of Daddy’s Home, following 24 successful performances in Goa. This special staging was financially supported by the Tiatr Academy of Goa and attracted nearly 500 attendees, including Konkani lovers from nearby cities such as Surat and Baroda who travelled to witness the event.

Speaking to O Heraldo, Fr Milton Rodrigues shared his joy and pride at the overwhelming response.

“We celebrated the Silver Jubilee of our tiatr Daddy’s Home with its 25th performance in Ahmedabad. It was a very special moment to bring our tiatr to the vibrant Konkani-speaking community in Gujarat. Their warmth and enthusiasm reminded us why this art form matters so much,” he said.

“The Romi script has always kept the Konkani flag high. This show was more than just a performance; it was a celebration of our shared culture and heritage,” he remarked.

He also extended his heartfelt gratitude to the Tiatr Academy of Goa for its continued support, enabling tiatrists to take Konkani theatre to audiences beyond Goan borders.
