Heavy rains have triggered a fresh wave of environmental concerns along the Cavelossim-Mobor beach belt, as dead fish and water plants from the Sal River have washed ashore, raising fears of pollution and foul odors due to decomposition.

Local Sarpanch Dixon Vaz has appealed to the government for immediate intervention to clean the shoreline and prevent further deterioration of the beach environment. “The situation is worsening year after year. If left unchecked, the stench and ecological impact will only increase,” Vaz stated.

According to locals, this issue has escalated over the past three years, primarily due to the unchecked growth of water hyacinth in the Sal River. The dense vegetation not only clogs waterways but also disrupts aquatic ecosystems, leading to the death of fish and degradation of water quality.

Vaz emphasized the need for a long-term solution. “The root cause—excessive water hyacinth—must be scientifically analyzed and addressed. Temporary cleanups are not enough,” he added.

Environmental activists and residents are now calling for sustained river management efforts and stricter environmental monitoring to protect one of South Goa’s most iconic coastal stretches.
