MARGAO: Nuvem residents, pedestrians and commuters are forced to grope in the dark as the streetlights on the Western Bypass in the Rumdier-Nuvem stretch have not been functioning for almost over a month.
“The lack of streetlights often causes accidents here especially those involving pedestrians during the nights,” say locals.
The non-functional of traffic signals, in addition to the non-functioning streetlights, is further escalating the hazards on the Western Bypass in the Rumdier-Nuvem stretch.
Residents and daily commuters have reported difficulty navigating the route at night, with many struggling to spot oncoming traffic, road dividers, and even the edges of the road.
The complete darkness along this stretch has not only made the road hazardous but also led to fears of accidents, especially given the lack of streetlights in an area that was expected to be fully functional long ago.
One local resident shared their concerns: “The streetlights have not been functioning for the last several days. It’s not just a safety issue, but a security one too. We fear accidents, and we dread having to leave our homes at night, even in case of an emergency.” The absence of street lighting has also led to other issues, including illegal garbage dumping, which some residents believe is taking place under the cover of darkness.
The locals are calling for urgent action from the authorities to restore proper lighting along this key stretch of the Western Bypass.
