MARGAO: A group of concerned citizens from Margao has approached the Margao Municipal Council (MMC) with a compelling request to erect a statue of Mahatma Gandhi in their town. The initiative, spearheaded by residents of Salcete Taluka, aims to address the absence of a symbolic representation of the Father of the Nation in South Goa’s major town.

In a memorandum presented to MMC Chairperson Damodar Shirodkar, the group suggested that the installation of Gandhi’s statue could play a crucial role in countering divisive forces and reinforcing the principles of harmony and national unity. They expressed hope that the municipal council would recognise the importance of this symbolic gesture and take necessary actions to fulfill their request.

The citizens emphasized the global admiration for Gandhi, whose principles transcend boundaries of religion, race, caste, and nationality. They argued that Gandhi’s ideologies of nonviolence, truth, justice, political tolerance, and religious pluralism are fundamental to creating a more equitable and compassionate world.

The petitioners highlighted the current critical situation in India, expressing concern over ideologies of hatred and divisive values. They stressed the importance of promoting leaders who advocate for peace, unity, and secularism, as enshrined in the Indian Constitution. The proposed statue, they believe, would serve as a powerful reminder of these essential values.

The citizens pointed out that despite Margao’s significance as the major town in South Goa, it lacks a statue of Gandhi. They view this as a notable omission, given Gandhi’s status as a universally respected figure whose teachings continue to inspire people worldwide.

The citizens concluded their memorandum by reiterating their statue demand, viewing it as a step towards fostering a more inclusive and peaceful society.
