MARGAO: The ongoing beef shortage and price hike have made it difficult for consumers to afford their preferred cuts. Further price hike is likely if supply does not return to normal soon.

The prevailing situation could push beef vendors into further trouble and compel the consumers to explore alternative options or reduce their beef consumption.

The shortage has caused some catering services to stop offering beef dishes altogether and seek alternatives in their menu.

Beef traders are facing issues at the borders, leading to delays and obstacles in procuring adequate stock.

Beef vendors have been experiencing significant challenges for a month and have sought government intervention to address the issue.

Currently, the price of boneless beef has risen from Rs 380 to Rs 400 per kg, with some vendors selling it for as much as Rs 500. Additionally, the price of ‘loam’ has increased from Rs 450 to Rs 500, while ‘undercut’ prices have gone up from Rs 550 to Rs 600.

A beef vendor from Gandhi Market told O Heraldo that the supply issues from the neighbouring States have worsened recently.

He expressed frustration over the challenges

in obtaining beef, noting that shipments are being halted at the borders for what he described as unnecessary reasons.

He emphasised that if the government or the authorities wish to restrict imports from other States, they must ensure a sufficient supply to meet demand in Goa.

He said that the price hike is a direct result of inflated rates from suppliers, who are facing significant challenges at the borders. These supply chain disruptions have left vendors with no choice, but to pass on the additional costs to consumers.

Santan D’Souza, a catering service owner, mentioned that they are advising party organisers, particularly for weddings, to avoid including beef dishes on their menus.
