CALANGUTE: In an attempt to avoid traffic congestion during the peak tourism season, the Calangute panchayat has started a drive against parking of vehicles in the market area. The drive is being implemented along with the traffic police, panchayat members said.

“We are carrying out a drive against illegal parking at the tinto area. Vehicles parked by the roadside are being impounded and owners will be penalised. Most of the violators are owners of who provide vehicles on rental services” the panchas said and added that rental vehicles are not supposed to be parked by the roadside.

It may be recalled that the Calangute Congress block committee had recently handed over a memorandum about the traffic congestion and hardship faced by commuters during peak tourism season to the traffic police. They had stated that there are constant traffic jams in Calangute, largely due to the bad roads and double parking by tourist vehicles and large tourist buses.

As a preventive measure, the panchayat is putting up no-parking signboards in the area.

“There used to be major traffic congestion and the most congestion was at Calangute tinto, so the VP took a decision that all those vehicles causing traffic congestion should be removed,” panchayat secretary Arjun Velip said.
