Drug Abuse Destroys Homes, Not Just Lives: Goa Police Launches Hard-Hitting Awareness Drive

To commemorate the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Goa Police launched a series of awareness initiatives aimed at educating the public about the widespread and devastating effects of drug addiction.

Speaking at one of the events, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Keshav Ram Chaurasia stressed that drug abuse is unlike other crimes due to its deeply corrosive impact on families and society. “Drug abuse doesn’t just affect the user. It tears apart families, leaving behind emotional trauma, financial ruin, and social isolation,” he said.

IGP Chaurasia explained that addiction often traps households in cycles of shame and helplessness, with loved ones bearing the brunt of the damage. “Unlike other crimes, where the harm may be limited to a specific victim, drug addiction spreads like a disease through the home—impacting parents, spouses, and children alike.”

He also pointed to the strong link between addiction and criminal activity, noting that addicts frequently resort to theft, violence, or other illegal acts to fuel their dependency. “This contributes to rising crime and puts entire communities at risk,” he warned, calling for a comprehensive strategy—combining law enforcement, community involvement, and rehabilitation.

Throughout the state, Goa Police organized rallies, school awareness programs, and youth-focused sessions, reinforcing the message that combating drug abuse is a shared responsibility. Citizens were urged to stay alert, report suspicious activity, and support those struggling with addiction.

The observance served as a stark reminder that drug abuse is not just a personal issue—it’s a societal threat that can only be overcome through empathy, vigilance, and collective action.
