MARGAO: In response to growing concerns about environmental protection at Mobor Beach, the Cavelossim village panchayat has decided to take action against violators.
Recognising the importance of safeguarding the area, the panchayat is committed to addressing the issues that threaten the beach’s integrity and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.
The panchayat is emphasising the restoration of the land to its original condition, which has been compromised by the alleged destruction of sand dunes and vegetation.
According to Cavelossim Sarpanch Dixon Vaz, there are several other concerns raised by locals that need attention. He clarified that the sports personality in question has granted power of attorney to another individual, indicating that there is no direct involvement of the person in this matter.
A group of citizens from Mobor-Cavelossim has voiced concerns regarding the alleged destruction of sand dunes at Mobor Beach, calling for strict action to address the issue. In response to these demands, the panchayat has issued a stop-work notice to the individual responsible.
The Sarpanch stated, “There are multiple owners of the property, and the concerned sports personality is just one among them. The ongoing road construction is being carried out privately. Previously, there was an issue involving the cutting down of trees and setting them on fire at the site, which led to work being halted. The responsible party was instructed to replant the trees as mandated by the Forest Act, but there has been no follow-up on this matter.”
He noted that the panchayat has taken serious action regarding the ongoing road construction and has issued a stop work notice to the concerned party. Vas further highlighted that the government has placed sandbags near the property owned by the sports personality, citing concerns about sand erosion. This has raised apprehensions among the community, with many believing that the measures are intended to protect the landowner rather than address the broader environmental issues at Mobor Beach.
He added that the panchayat will be deliberating on the issue and will provide a clear picture of the situation very soon. However, locals have alleged that the development of the property is occurring at the expense of sand dunes and vegetation, raising significant environmental concerns.
