Evicted Without Notice: Mapusa Women Vendors Demand Answers from Municipal Council
Published on

Tensions flared at the Mapusa Municipal Council (MMC) office on Monday as around 40 local women vegetable vendors, recently evicted from the Mapusa market, arrived to demand an explanation from the Chief Officer and Chairperson over the abrupt action.

The women allege that the eviction was carried out without any prior notice, transparency, or alternative arrangement, despite their long-standing presence and dependence on the market for their livelihood. Many said they were shocked to find their stalls removed without warning.

Adding to their grievances, the vendors accused an MMC staff member of verbally abusing several women during the eviction, and are now demanding disciplinary action against the official involved.

"We have families to feed, and this market is our only source of income. How can they remove us without even informing us?" asked one of the aggrieved vendors.

The Chief Officer and Chairperson were reportedly unavailable for immediate comment. Meanwhile, the vendors have warned they will continue their protest until a resolution is reached.
