A section of the false ceiling in the Western Music classroom at Kala Academy, Goa, collapsed on July 26, 2025, raising serious concerns about the building’s structural safety. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The incident occurred without warning, prompting academy officials to immediately cordon off the affected area as a precaution. Structural assessments and safety inspections are currently underway.
Kala Academy, an iconic cultural institution designed by renowned architect Charles Correa, has long been a hub for the performing arts in Goa, supporting music, dance, and theatre. However, the building has faced persistent infrastructure problems since renovation work began in 2021. Though it was reopened in late 2023, earlier incidents—including a previous false ceiling collapse in April and ongoing issues with water leakage—had already drawn criticism from artists and cultural advocates. Many have called for greater government accountability and improved facility management.
In response to the latest collapse, expert teams of engineers and safety officials have been deployed to investigate the root cause. They are evaluating factors such as poor installation, material degradation, environmental damage, and potential impact from recent unseasonal rains. The outcome of their findings will shape the next phase of structural repairs and preventive measures.
To ensure continuity, the Western Music classes have been temporarily shifted to alternative safe locations within the academy. The administration has also committed to enhancing maintenance protocols and implementing more frequent safety audits across the premises.
