FDA Seizes 60 Crates of Mangoes

Mapusa, Goa: In a crackdown on artificially ripened fruits, the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) conducted an inspection at the Mapusa wholesale yard and seized 60 crates (approximately 120 kg) of Raigad mangoes suspected to be chemically treated for artificial ripening.

The seized stock was immediately marked for destruction, with the Mapusa Municipal Council assisting FDA officials in the disposal process.

According to FDA sources, the mangoes were suspected to have been ripened using unauthorized substances, in violation of food safety regulations. Laboratory test reports are currently awaited to confirm the use of banned ripening agents such as calcium carbide or ethylene in unsafe concentrations.

Authorities have reiterated their commitment to ensuring consumer safety and have warned vendors against the use of harmful chemicals in fruit ripening, which can pose serious health risks. Regular inspections are expected to continue across Goa as mango season peaks, with a focus on wholesale markets and retail outlets.
