The South Goa team of the Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) conducted a targeted inspection drive in Salcete taluka, uncovering serious violations of hygiene and food safety standards at multiple food business establishments. The action resulted in the shutdown of two manufacturing units and one restaurant.
During the inspections, led by Designated Officer Smt. Sanjyot Kudalkar along with Food Safety Officials Shri Madhav Kavlekar, Miss Pradiksha Chopdekar, and Shri Amardeep Gaude, multiple lapses were recorded:
Bakery Unit: Found operating in unhygienic conditions with dirty floors, flaking paint, loose wiring, and filthy storage trays. The unit lacked proper washing facilities, pest control certification, and sanitary cards for workers. It was immediately ordered to halt operations and submit a compliance report.
Chips Manufacturing Unit: Caught cooking food on a footpath without basic infrastructure like washing or exhaust systems. Products lacked labeling, and the unit had no valid operating license despite previous warnings. Items worth ₹20,000 were seized and marked for destruction, and the unit was directed to stop operations until it obtains the required licenses.
Restaurant in Margao Market: Found in disrepair with broken tiles, soot-covered walls, an open toilet, a non-functional exhaust system, and no hygiene or pest control records. Authorities ordered the restaurant to cease operations and take corrective steps.
The FDA has reiterated its commitment to protecting public health and ensuring food safety compliance. Such enforcement drives will continue across Goa to hold violators accountable and maintain food quality standards.
