The ten-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival commenced in Goa on Wednesday with deep devotion and traditional rituals as families across the state welcomed Lord Ganesha into their homes.

With nearly 70 per cent of Goa’s population being Hindu, the festival is observed in almost every household. After bringing idols home on Tuesday night, devotees performed consecration rituals from 7 am onwards on Wednesday.

The occasion also brings about a significant homecoming, as Goans working outside the state and abroad return to their native villages to celebrate with their families. Across Goa, hundreds of Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandals began their festivities, unveiling grand idols in colourful processions and preparing ten days of cultural events.

Extending his greetings, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant described Ganesh Chaturthi as Goa’s most cherished festival, known locally as Chavath. He urged people to celebrate in an eco-friendly manner, calling Lord Ganesha the remover of obstacles and the embodiment of wisdom, righteousness, and good fortune.

Goa Governor P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju also conveyed warm wishes, emphasising that Chavath represents not only devotion but also cultural heritage and family bonds. He encouraged Goans to nurture eco-friendly traditions and harmony among communities.

Similarly, Archbishop of Goa and Daman Rev. Filipe Neri Cardinal Ferrao extended heartfelt greetings to Hindu brethren, recalling Pope Leo XIV’s message of unity and praying for peace and joy among all communities.

Over the next ten days, Goa will witness daily rituals, cultural programmes, and traditional festivities, reaffirming the state’s vibrant cultural fabric.
