A fisherman was dramatically rescued from drowning off Mobor beach on Sunday, June 22, after being swept nearly 150 meters out to sea by powerful monsoon currents. The incident unfolded as a group of 20 to 25 fishermen were swimming near the rocks, when one of them was suddenly pulled into deeper waters and found himself unable to return to shore.
His companions quickly raised the alarm, alerting lifesaver Mega Velip, who immediately notified the Drishti Marine team at the Mobor watchtower. Responding without delay, two jetskis—one each from Mobor and Cavelossim beaches—were deployed for the rescue. Lifesavers located the distressed fisherman about 150 meters from the shoreline. Lavu Gaonkar, operating one of the jetskis, managed to reach the fisherman and bring him safely back to shore.
Upon arrival at the Mobor watchtower, the fisherman was found to be experiencing breathing difficulties. Lifesavers placed him in the recovery position and administered oxygen to stabilize his condition. He was subsequently handed over to the 108 ambulance team and transported to a hospital in Margao, where he is reported to be stable.
Authorities have reiterated warnings against swimming during the monsoon season, emphasizing that rough sea conditions can be hazardous even for experienced swimmers and fishermen. This incident highlights the crucial role of trained lifesavers and rapid response in ensuring beach safety during Goa’s unpredictable monsoon months.
