MARGAO: Responding to the demands of the local fishing community, Krishna ‘Daji’ Salkar announced that fishermen will be permitted to sell their catch at the wholesale fish market even after 9 pm. This decision aims to accommodate the needs of traditional fishermen and ensure their ability to sell fresh fish without restrictions.
On Friday, traditional fishermen from Salcete met with Salkar, chairman of the South Goa Planning and Development Authority (SGPDA) , to discuss a prohibition that prevents them from landing their evening catch at the wholesale fish market after 9 pm.
The fishermen expressed concerns that the timing restrictions hinder their ability to sell their catch, which often cannot be planned.
Salkar acknowledged their issues and assured that solutions would be explored to better accommodate their needs.
The fishermen argued that their catch times are unpredictable, and if forced to wait, their fish could perish and be unfit for consumption. They requested permission to sell their catch even after midnight.
Salkar explained that he was compelled to enforce this rule due to a court order but offered temporary permission for the fishermen to continue selling their fish. He encouraged them to petition the court for a more permanent solution, suggesting that if they obtain a favourable ruling, it will prevent future issues.
“Efforts are underway to support local fishermen in Margao and Vasco, ensuring that the fishing business remains in the hands of Goans fishermen”,
said Salkar.
