CALANGUTE: In the early hours of Friday, five male tourists from Kerala, aged between 25 and 30, were rescued by lifeguards off Calangute beach after entering the sea in an intoxicated state.

The tourists reportedly ventured into the water at around 6.20 am, despite the fact that swimming on Goa’s beaches is prohibited between 6 pm and 7 am. Shubham Kelaskar, a lifesaver stationed at Calangute, noticed the group entering the sea and tried to warn them of the danger, but they ignored his repeated cautions. He alerted his colleagues at the lifesaver tower to be on standby.

As the tourists waded further into the water, they were caught in a rip current about 30 metres from the shore. Realising they were in distress, Shubham, along with fellow lifesavers Nakul Usapkar, Sujal Dhuri, Kartik Naik, and Rohit Hirnaik, quickly sprang into action. Using rescue tubes, they managed to bring the men safely back to the shore.

Once ashore, the lifesavers checked the tourists' vitals to ensure they were unharmed.
