MARGAO: A group of citizens in Margao has voiced strong concerns over the misuse of footpaths near the Konkan Railway station. Residents are frustrated by the improper use of these walkways, which they believe endangers pedestrians.
Locals are calling for immediate action to ensure that the footpaths are safe and accessible. They report that the area has become a dumping ground for garbage and is often occupied by migrants seeking shelter, even during the day. To make matters worse, some individuals are conducting business activities on the footpath.
Citizens expressed disappointment in the Margao Municipality, accusing it of neglecting the maintenance and cleanliness of the footpath. Many feel that the lack of attention from local authorities has led to the current disarray and are demanding more proactive measures for proper management.
Savio Coutinho voiced his concerns, stating, "We find scrap, parked vehicles, and garbage dumped everywhere, alongside makeshift businesses operating without fear." He noted the presence of black spots and overgrown bushes, which make the footpath unsafe for pedestrians. "It has turned into a nuisance," he added.
Another resident emphasized that the ongoing business activities on the footpath, despite locals’ objections, suggest possible backing from political leaders. "Footpaths are meant for walking, not for conducting business," he said, urging the Collector's office to intervene and direct local authorities to clear the footpath promptly.
