PANJIM: Emphasising the imperative of sustainability, Director of Indian Institute of Technology-Goa (IIT) Professor Dhirendra Katti highlighted that while global initiatives are crucial, the foundation for a sustainable future lies within our own homes.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 57th Engineers Day celebrated by the Institution of Engineers (India), Goa State Centre, Professor Katti underscored the significance of small, everyday actions in reducing waste and conserving resources. He urged the audience to adopt practices that minimise the wastage of water, electricity and food.
Present on the dais were Er Ashwani Rawat, Co-Founder and Director at Transerve Technologies Pvt Ltd, Er Anwar Khan, Chairman and Er Siddhant Dubhashi, Honorary Secretary-IEI, Goa State Centre.
Emphasising the role of engineers in promoting sustainability, Prof Katti encouraged engineers to educate the younger generation about the importance of environmental stewardship and to lead by example in their own homes. By practicing sustainability principles and sharing their knowledge, engineers can inspire the next generation to become conscious consumers and responsible citizens.
Er Ashwani Rawat discussed sustainability in Artificial Intelligence across all spheres of work. He informed the audience that India was in the nascent stage compared to the US, China, and other Western countries.
He explained the different types of AI - narrow intelligence, artificial general intelligence, and super intelligence - and deliberated on their capabilities as they evolve. He also discussed the role of AI in engineering, which could revolutionise engineering processes through massive design simulations that are currently impossible.
Er Anwar Khan informed them about IEI’s role in the development of the engineering fraternity in India. Er Siddhant Dubhashi gave a detailed presentation of the various activities carried out by IEI, Goa State Centre in the past year.
Er Shashank Shirvoikar, a member of the Executive Committee of IEI, presented a life sketch of MokshagundamVisvesvaraya.
Prof Katti garlanded the portrait of Visvesvaraya and executive members of IEI, GSC were felicitated for their contributions to the State in the past year.
On the occasion, two eminent engineers - former PWD chief engineer Dattaprasad Borkar and Dilip Sahakari - were felicitated for their outstanding work in the State.
Later Siddhant Dubhashi proposed a vote of thanks. Yogita Kharkanis compered the function.
