Fresh Beef Returns to Goan Markets After Month-Long Shortage Amid Supply Crunch

Fresh beef has returned to Goan markets following nearly a month-long disruption, after operations resumed at the Goa Meat Complex Limited (GMCL) in Usgao. The state-run abattoir received new consignments of cattle from Karnataka, which were processed over the weekend.

Officials at GMCL confirmed that around 50 animals underwent mandatory veterinary checks before slaughter. Local traders reported receiving an estimated six to seven tonnes of beef on Tuesday. However, demand outstripped supply, with many outlets running out of stock by afternoon.

The Quraishi Meat Traders Association warned that the current supply is insufficient and urged authorities to increase deliveries to meet consumer needs. The shortage was triggered by prolonged strikes in Karnataka and Maharashtra, which had slashed Goa’s daily beef supply by nearly 85%, from the usual 20 tonnes to just 2-5 tonnes.
