On May 30, 1987, Goa officially became the 25th state of the Indian Union, transitioning from a Union Territory in a landmark moment now commemorated as Statehood Day. As Goa marks 39 years of statehood, national leaders and political figures have come together to honour its unique journey and reaffirm the importance of protecting its cultural and historical identity.
President Droupadi Murmu, in her Statehood Day message, praised Goa’s timeless allure, vibrant culture, and global appeal. She called on citizens and tourists to support sustainable tourism and community efforts to safeguard its heritage.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP National President J.P. Nadda acknowledged Goa’s evolution into a world-renowned destination, celebrating its harmonious blend of tradition and modern living. Meanwhile, Congress leaders including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge paid homage to Goa’s natural splendour and rich legacy, and remembered Rajiv Gandhi, whose leadership was instrumental in achieving statehood.
Goa’s path to statehood was shaped by key historic milestones — from its liberation from Portuguese rule in 1961, to the pivotal Opinion Poll of 1967, when Goans decisively chose to preserve their identity rather than merge with Maharashtra.
