MARGAO: The Global Konknni Forum (GKF) is set to meet Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira to discuss the demand for equal status for the Roman script in the Official Language Act.
A delegation led by GKF president Kennedy Afonso will meet Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira on September 27, at the South Goa Collectorate complex in Margao. The Forum will present a petition advocating for two Bills in favour of the Roman script.
GKF aims to ensure that both the Roman and Devanagari scripts receive recognition, reflecting the diverse cultural heritage of Goa.
The GKF president stated that the first Bill aims to amend the Official Language Act to include the Roman script alongside Devanagari, while the second seeks to introduce Konkani in the Roman script as part of the curriculum from Class I to Class X. Afonso emphasised that these measures are crucial for promoting linguistic diversity and ensuring that all students have access to education in their preferred script.
GKF expressed its gratitude for the appointment with Minister Aleixo Sequeira and is optimistic that the Nuvem MLA will support the people.
Afonso noted that resolutions advocating for the Roman script have been passed in almost all villages of the constituency, as well as in over 50 gram sabhas across the State.
