The Global Romi Lipi Abhiyan has expressed strong disappointment over the rejection of a resolution to introduce Romi Konkani in schools, which was tabled by Aldona MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira in the Goa Legislative Assembly.
The group criticized Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for remaining silent on the issue and allegedly ignoring well-reasoned arguments presented by opposition legislators. Citing the Jha Commission report and provisions of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Abhiyan reiterated that Romi Konkani deserves recognition and inclusion in Goa’s education system.
The organization also strongly condemned remarks made by noted Konkani writer Uday Bhembre, who reportedly labeled Christian community leaders promoting the Romi script as "anti-national." The Abhiyan called such statements divisive and disrespectful, asserting that advocating for Romi Konkani is a cultural and linguistic right, not an act of disloyalty.
The group has vowed to continue its campaign and called for a more inclusive approach to Konkani language policy in the state.
