Goa Cabinet Approves Creation of Dedicated Department of Inland Waterways

In a significant administrative move, the Goa Cabinet has approved the establishment of a dedicated Department of Inland Waterways, aimed at streamlining the management and development of the state’s riverine transport network.

Until now, matters related to river navigation were handled by the Captain of Ports through the River Navigation Department (RND). The creation of a separate department marks a shift toward a more focused and structured approach to harnessing Goa’s vast inland waterways for transport, tourism, and trade.

Government officials said the new department will help modernise ferry services, boost eco-friendly transport options, and support infrastructure development along key waterways. It will also be tasked with exploring public-private partnerships, improving safety standards, and ensuring better coordination with national agencies involved in inland water transport.

The move is seen as part of the state’s broader push to decongest road traffic and promote sustainable, water-based mobility solutions. Further details regarding staffing, budgeting, and operational scope of the new department are expected to be announced shortly.
