Goa marked its 79th Independence Day with patriotic fervour as Chief Minister Pramod Sawant hoisted the Tricolour at the state function in Panaji and called on citizens to embrace the vision of ‘Local for Global’ under the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative.

In his address, Sawant underlined that strengthening swadeshi industries, artisans, and cultural traditions was key to a self-reliant and prosperous Goa. “By embracing swadeshi and supporting local industries, we not only boost our economy but also safeguard our identity,” he said, while paying homage to the sacrifices of India’s freedom fighters.

The Chief Minister highlighted several welfare measures. Homes were set to be regularised, benefits of the Forest Rights Act extended to 10,000 applicants, and long-serving daily wage workers in municipalities, forests, and health services would finally receive temporary status along with increments. “For 20 years, daily wage workers have waited for recognition. Today, they will be granted dignity and due benefits,” he declared.

Education and healthcare formed another key focus. Sawant pointed to Goa’s 100% literacy rate, school upgrades, foreign study opportunities, modernised district hospitals, and new specialised OPDs for cancer care. Over 100 doctors were also recruited to strengthen public health services.

On employment and skilling, he cited the work of the Human Resource Development Foundation, ITIs, Tata Technology Centre, and the IIT Centre of Excellence. More than 27,000 apprentices had joined the Goa Chief Minister’s Apprenticeship Program, creating opportunities across health, education, tourism, and other sectors.

Industrial reforms also featured prominently. The CM noted that the New Industrial Development Promotion Board and Goa Industrial Development Corporation were enabling green industries and ensuring faster approvals. “Licences are now being issued within seven days, creating a business-friendly environment,” he said.

Tourism and cleanliness, too, were part of his vision. Homestay programmes would offer visitors authentic local experiences, while municipalities and panchayats excelling in waste management were applauded for their efforts.

Reiterating his vision of a self-reliant Goa, Sawant spoke of projects aimed at enhancing culture and unity, including the upcoming Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Digital Museum at Farmagudi and Unity Malls designed to boost the Happiness Index. “We honour our freedom by building a strong and prosperous nation,” he concluded.

On law and order, Sawant sent out a stern warning, declaring that unregistered security agencies would be shut down to prevent gang wars and ensure peace across the state.
