The Goa Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) launched a gherao protest on Tuesday, marching towards the River Navigation Department (RND) office in Betim. The demonstration comes in the wake of the recent Chorao ferry boat incident and is aimed at holding the BJP-led state government accountable for what the party claims is gross negligence and systemic corruption.
Congress leaders and party workers raised slogans demanding accountability and transparency from the RND and the government, accusing the administration of compromising public safety due to inefficiency and mismanagement.
"The ferry mishap is not just an accident — it's a result of the BJP government’s consistent failure to maintain essential infrastructure and its alleged links to corrupt practices," a Congress spokesperson said during the protest.
The Chorao ferry incident, which triggered public outrage, has once again drawn attention to the deteriorating condition of Goa’s ferry services, a lifeline for many island communities. The Congress party is demanding a thorough investigation into the incident and immediate corrective measures to ensure commuter safety.
As the protest reached the RND office premises, police forces were deployed to maintain order. GPCC leaders vowed to continue their agitation until those responsible are held accountable and systemic reforms are initiated.
