Goa Forward slams highway plan, demands protection for sacred sites

Published on

A group of concerned villagers from Bhoma met with Goa Forward Party President Vijai Sardesai, seeking his support against the proposed expansion of National Highway 4A, which they fear will lead to the demolition of centuries-old temples. The historic Sateri and Mahadev temples, deeply revered by the Bahujan Samaj, are among the religious sites under threat.

Sardesai strongly criticized the BJP-led state government, accusing it of sacrificing Goa’s cultural and spiritual heritage for misguided development. He disclosed that he had personally requested Union Minister Nitin Gadkari to explore an alternative highway alignment that would protect these temples. However, the state government has failed to act on this suggestion and continues to ignore both public opposition and feasible alternatives.

The villagers have proposed a bypass route that is shorter, more cost-effective, and far less damaging to the community. They warn that the current alignment would not only destroy sacred sites but also divide the village and displace around 100 families. Sardesai echoed these concerns, urging the government to depoliticize the issue and prioritize heritage preservation. He reaffirmed his commitment to advocating for a realignment that balances infrastructure needs with respect for Goa’s cultural and spiritual identity.
