Goa Government Bans PoP Ganesh Idols; Inspections from August 1, Strict Action Against Violators

In a significant move aimed at protecting the environment, the Goa government has banned the import, sale, and transportation of Plaster of Paris (PoP) Ganesh idols across the state. The directive comes ahead of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival and is part of efforts to promote eco-friendly celebrations.

According to the order issued, authorities will conduct strict inspections of Chitrashallas (idol-making workshops and outlets) from August 1 to 14 to ensure compliance. Violators of the ban will face stern action, including cancellation of trade licenses.

The government has urged artisans and retailers to promote clay and other biodegradable idols to reduce environmental harm during idol immersions. The Pollution Control Board and local authorities will oversee implementation, and the public has been asked to report any violations.

The move aligns with national directives on sustainable festival practices and seeks to preserve water bodies from chemical contamination caused by PoP idols.
