Goa Government Cracks Down on Bull Fishing with Drone Surveillance, Coastal Monitoring
Published on

In a significant move to tackle the illegal practice of bull fishing, the Goa government has announced a multi-pronged strategy involving the coastal police and the Indian Coast Guard. The decision was revealed by the Fisheries Minister following a high-level meeting with security and enforcement agencies.

Highlighting the government’s seriousness in addressing the issue, the minister said drone surveillance will soon be deployed to monitor bull fishing activities along the state’s coastline. In addition, dedicated offices will be established at all jetties to assist traditional fishermen in lodging complaints related to bull fishing.

“This is a matter of protecting our marine resources and the livelihood of traditional fishermen. We are committed to taking strong action,” the minister said.

The illegal practice of bull fishing — involving the use of mechanised trawlers in violation of fishing norms — has drawn widespread criticism from local fishing communities, who say it threatens sustainable fishing practices and depletes fish stocks.

With surveillance set to be intensified and complaint mechanisms streamlined, the government aims to send a strong message against violations in Goan waters.
