In a major policy shift, the Goa government has made participation in International Yoga Day on June 21 mandatory for all employees of government, semi-government bodies, and public corporations. Until now, taking part in Yoga Day events was a voluntary activity.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who chaired a high-level planning meeting, announced that beginning June 1, daily yoga sessions will be held across all government and semi-government departments with 100% employee participation.
“It is compulsory for government employees to take part in International Yoga Day activities. If they cannot attend the official sessions, they must participate at a local venue — like a temple or school — and send a photo of their participation to their Head of Department,” Sawant said.
As part of the initiative, the government has also urged all employees to immediately register on the iGOT Karmayogi portal, the central platform under Mission Karmayogi, which aims to enhance public service delivery. Employees are encouraged to enroll in the Yoga at Workplace certificate course available on the portal.
"This initiative is not only beneficial for physical health but will also contribute to improved work efficiency," the Chief Minister emphasized.
With schools set to reopen on June 4, yoga classes will also be introduced from day one across all government and higher secondary schools. The state will celebrate International Yoga Day at 30 different locations to ensure widespread participation.
The government’s push marks a significant step in integrating wellness and productivity within the public sector workforce.
