Goa’s Minister for Art and Culture, Govind Gaude, is likely to face disciplinary action following his public accusations of corruption within his own government, particularly targeting the Tribal Welfare Department, which falls under the Chief Minister's purview.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant expressed strong disapproval over Gaude’s remarks, calling them “irresponsible” and inappropriate for someone holding a ministerial post. “We have taken serious cognizance of the matter. A responsible minister should not have made such an irresponsible statement. Necessary action will be initiated soon,” Sawant said.
The controversy erupted during Gaude’s address at the Prerna Din function held in Ponda on Sunday, where he accused officials of clearing contractors' files in exchange for bribes. He questioned the transparency and efficiency of the Tribal Welfare Department, alleging that corrupt practices were being carried out clandestinely at the Shram Shakti Bhavan building.
“Contractors don’t even need to go to the office. Everything happens behind the scenes, and they assume we don’t know,” Gaude stated during his speech. He further criticized the department for its inability to effectively organize public events, despite receiving significant taxpayer funding.
Gaude's remarks have stirred a political storm, with many viewing the public allegations as a breach of cabinet discipline. The Chief Minister has indicated that the government will not take the matter lightly and action will follow.
The incident has sparked debate over internal accountability and transparency within the government, especially in departments handling welfare schemes and public funds.
