The Konkani music and tiatr fraternity was plunged into grief on Monday with the passing of Agnelo D’Costa, a well-known singer, musician, and composer from Navelim. D’Costa, known for his soulful voice and versatile compositions, was a prominent figure in Goa’s Konkani music scene for decades.
A member of the popular music band ‘Day Breakers’, D’Costa’s talent earned him admiration not only on stage but also in the recording studio. Under the banner of Dinfa Productions, he was a pioneer in the production of Konkani audio albums, having released more than 25 albums over the years. Some of his notable works include Aircash, Rajiv Gandhi, Dubhavachi Nodor, Roddonaka Bhinaka, and Oklecho Xirap, which became household names among Konkani music lovers.
His contribution to tiatr, Goa’s beloved form of musical theatre, was equally significant. D’Costa lent his voice to numerous productions, including the popular tiatr ‘Futt’, written and directed by Fausto V. Da Costa, which toured extensively across Goa, Mumbai, and Pune. His ability to blend emotion with melody made his performances memorable for audiences far and wide.
Beyond his music, D’Costa was also known for organising Konkani musical shows across the state, creating platforms for local talent and helping to keep the language and culture alive through art. His efforts not only entertained but also inspired a generation of young Konkani musicians.
The Tiatr Academy of Goa (TAG) expressed deep sorrow at his demise. Anthony Barbosa, President of TAG, said, “We have lost yet another great artist of the Konkani stage. He was certainly known for his musical shows and Konkani albums in his time. His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill.”
As news of his passing spread, tributes poured in from fellow artists, fans, and cultural organisations, all remembering D’Costa as a gifted artist whose dedication and passion enriched Goa’s cultural landscape. His legacy, etched in melodies and memories, will continue to inspire the Konkani music community for years to come.
