Goa is in mourning following the death of Eupsiquio Eusebio Antonio Ligorio Fernandes, the renowned and beloved tiatrist, fondly known as Ligorio Fernandes. The legendary writer, director, and producer was a prominent figure in the world of Konkani tiatr and is remembered for his impactful and thought-provoking works that resonated with audiences across the state.

Born in 1939 in Benaulim, Ligorio Fernandes developed an early love for Konkani and tiatr. Despite beginning his career in other fields after completing his SSC, his passion for theatre remained unwavering. Over his illustrious career, Ligorio wrote and directed over 30 tiatrs and khell-tiatrs, making a lasting contribution to the rich tradition of Konkani theatre.

His most famous works, including Krimidor, Fottkiri Axea, Ekach Karonnak Lagon, Hanv Nhoim Tem, Noxibantlem, Judas, Papi, and Julius Caesar, continue to be celebrated for their compelling social and religious themes. Ligorio’s khell-tiatrs, such as Jivea Devacho Put, Jezu Sorvonnddar, and Jezuchea Pavlamni Cholum-ia, were equally praised for their spiritual and moral depth, making him a cherished figure among tiatr enthusiasts.

In addition to his work on stage, Ligorio Fernandes contributed to Konkani audio culture, producing several CDs and cassettes, including Mhojea Patkak Sojea, which further solidified his influence on the genre. His dedication to enriching Konkani theatre earned him numerous accolades and awards over the years.

Anthony Barbosa, President of the Tiatr Academy of Goa, expressed his deep sorrow at Ligorio's passing, describing him as "a legendary artist" whose contributions to Konkani tiatr were "remarkable." He continued, "Ligorio was an inspiration to budding writers and directors, and he was a true gentleman who always supported his fellow artists."

Ligorio Fernandes will be remembered as one of the giants of Konkani theatre, whose work transcended time and continues to inspire future generations. His legacy in the world of tiatr will undoubtedly remain a guiding light for years to come.
