PANJIM: The Goa government has notified legislation enabling it to take over properties of persons who die without legal heirs and properties having no rightful owner.
The Goa Escheats, Forfeiture and Bona Vacantia Act, 2024, was notified on Thursday. The Act provides for the State government to assume charge, management, administration, supervision, custody, and disposal of such properties. Any immovable property that is escheated to the government shall not ordinarily be sold until it has been in possession of the government for 10 years or more, the Act states.
The government will give a time period of one year for claimants to come forward after notice in this regard is issued. The One-Man Commission constituted by the State government on land grabbing had recommended
such an Act.
