A well-marked low-pressure system over the east-central Arabian Sea, off the south Konkan coast, has triggered a red alert for Goa, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting extremely heavy rainfall in the region until May 25. The weather system is also expected to bring sustained heavy to very heavy rainfall over Gujarat, the Konkan region, Karnataka, and Kerala for the next seven days.
The intensifying rainfall coincides with the advancing southwest monsoon, which is expected to reach Kerala within the next two days. In response to the developing weather situation, the North Goa District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) convened a preparedness meeting on Friday to evaluate emergency response measures and enhance coordination among key agencies.
DDMA Chairperson Yashaswini B emphasized the importance of inter-agency collaboration, stating, "Preparedness is the cornerstone of disaster resilience. All agencies must work in close synergy to ensure a swift and effective response." She directed all departments to ensure essential services remain uninterrupted and that timely interventions are in place to protect lives and livelihoods during the upcoming weather events.
