Director General of Police (DGP) Alok Kumar on Thursday confirmed that police presence has been significantly increased across Goa, including heightened security in touristic zones and vulnerable locations.

Speaking to the media at Mantralaya in Porvorim, DGP Kumar stated that mock drills have recently been conducted in both North and South Goa, with active police participation to ensure readiness. "Security measures have been intensified both during the day and night," he added.

The DGP said the stepped-up vigilance comes following instructions from Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant, particularly aimed at improving safety in high-traffic tourist areas.

When asked whether any directives had been issued by the central government, Kumar said that instructions are received on a regular basis and that meetings are being held. However, he declined to share specific details, citing confidentiality.

Commenting on the ongoing investigation into the stampede during the Lairai Devi Zatra in Shirgao, which claimed six lives, Kumar stated that the fact-finding committee's report would soon be submitted to the state government for further action.

The enhanced security measures come amid rising concerns over public safety during religious gatherings and peak tourism seasons in the coastal state.
