WhatsApp users in Goa are being warned to stay vigilant due to a new hacking scam involving a malicious APK file named "RTO CHALAN.apk." Fraudsters are sending messages from numbers like 72503 69682, or possibly other unknown numbers, that contain this file. The message often includes a prompt stating, “The business won’t see if you read their messages until you reply or add them as a contact with the option: Block or Add,” pressuring users to interact.
This scam is designed to trick users into downloading the malicious APK, which, once installed, gives hackers remote access to their phones. Cybercrime officials have highlighted that the app can steal sensitive information such as banking details, UPI credentials, OTPs, contacts, messages, and even control the phone remotely. Victims risk losing money through unauthorized transactions and exposure of personal data. The scammers exploit people’s fear of traffic challans, mimicking official government communication to look convincing.
Authorities advise against downloading APK files or opening links received via WhatsApp or SMS from unknown sources. Legitimate traffic challan details should only be checked through official portals such as the Parivahan website or state RTO portals. Users are encouraged to keep their phone's software updated, install security apps, and enable two-factor authentication on banking applications for added protection. If anyone receives such messages, it is important to delete them immediately and report the incident to the cybercrime helpline 1930 for prompt action.
Being aware and cautious is the best defense against this rapidly spreading scam that threatens the digital security of WhatsApp users in Goa and beyond
