Goa Power Department Warns of Criminal Action Over Unsafe Use of Generators and Inverters

Chief Electrical Engineer Stephen Fernandes has issued a renewed warning that consumers operating generators, inverters, or renewable energy systems without adhering to mandatory safety norms face criminal prosecution and immediate disconnection of power supply.

In a public notice, the department underscored that prior permission and certified safety measures are compulsory for all forms of power generation connected to the grid. The caution comes after reports of consumers flouting regulations, which authorities say pose serious risks to power department personnel and public safety.

The notice also cited a fatal electrocution incident in Bicholim in 2024, allegedly triggered by backfed electricity from an improperly installed inverter. Officials stressed that any backfeeding into the public distribution network could result in deadly accidents and legal consequences.

Consumers have been urged to consult licensed electrical contractors and obtain necessary approvals before installing any backup or renewable energy systems to avoid penalties and ensure safe operations.
