Goa Sees 400+ Ration Cards Surrendered in Just 45 Days

Over 400 ration cards have been surrendered in Goa within the last 45 days by families whose annual income has risen beyond the prescribed limits.

Of these, 246 cards were surrendered in North Goa and 141 in South Goa, the majority belonging to the poorest categories under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). Civil Supplies Department officials confirmed that nearly 89% of the surrendered cards were NFSA and BPL, while only 10% were APL.

During the same period, around 100 new APL ration cards were issued, mostly to families who had given up their NFSA and BPL cards.

As per official records, Goa currently has 2.62 lakh active ration cards, of which 1.24 lakh fall under PHH and Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) categories covered by NFSA, while the remaining 1.37 lakh are APL.

Officials noted a sharp rise in surrendered cards in July–August, with 387 under NFSA and 44 APL cards given up. Of these, 103 families reapplied and were issued new APL cards, all in North Goa.

The revised rules mandate compulsory digital KYC compliance, enabling inspectors to better verify eligibility. Families from SC/ST communities earning above ₹50,000–₹1 lakh must now surrender their NFSA cards, shifting to BPL or APL categories depending on annual income.
