In a progressive move toward inclusive welfare, the Goa government has announced plans to construct permanent hostel facilities for persons with intellectual disabilities in both North and South Goa districts over the next four to five years. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Monday.

The hostels will cater to individuals with intellectual disabilities who are above the age of 18 and will be provided free of charge, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for adult PwDs (Persons with Disabilities).

Each hostel will include an attached vocational training centre aimed at keeping the residents actively engaged and helping them build life skills. "These centres will be staffed with trained professionals to support and manage the needs of young adults with disabilities," said Guruprasad Pawaskar, Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities.

The initiative is part of the state’s broader commitment to enhancing infrastructure and services for the differently-abled community, and is expected to provide long-term residential care, skill development, and social inclusion.

The project has been widely welcomed by disability rights advocates and families of individuals with special needs.
