In a major step toward strengthening coastal security and regulating fishing activities, Goa is set to introduce drone-based aerial surveillance along its coastline. The initiative aims to detect, monitor, and identify illegal or unauthorized fishing vessels operating in Goan waters.
Fisheries Minister Nilkanth Halarnkar confirmed the development, stating that a successful trial run has already been conducted. “We are collaborating with an agency that has experience in similar operations in Maharashtra. The use of drone technology will enhance our ability to monitor the coastline more effectively,” he said.
The aerial surveillance initiative is expected to help authorities enforce fishing regulations, prevent overfishing, and protect marine resources. It will also aid in improving safety at sea by keeping a closer watch on fishing activities.
The move has been welcomed by stakeholders in the fisheries sector, who believe it will lead to better regulation and long-term sustainability of marine livelihoods.
