The current state of train connectivity between Goa and Vailankanni remains limited, echoing concerns recently voiced in the Goa Assembly. At present, only one regular weekly train—the Velankanni Express (Train No. 17315)—operates from Madgaon, departing around 9:35 AM and taking nearly 27 hours to reach Vailankanni. This infrequent service results in quick ticket sellouts and significant inconvenience for pilgrims, as highlighted by Curtorim MLA Aleixo Reginaldo Lourenco and Mandrem MLA Jit Arolkar during the Assembly discussions.
To manage increased demand during pilgrimage season, the Railways has occasionally announced special trains, such as those departing from Vasco da Gama on August 27, September 2, and September 6, with return services scheduled soon after. While these trains offer temporary relief, they fall short of addressing the core issue of inadequate regular service.
Chief Minister Pramod Sawant’s assurance that the state will take up the matter with railway authorities shows continued concern at the government level. Local MLAs are pushing for either an increase in the frequency of regular trains or the introduction of more special services to better serve pilgrims traveling to this important Christian shrine.
As of now, however, no new permanent services have been announced, and the demand for better train connectivity to Vailankanni from Goa remains unaddressed in the long term.
