The Pernem and Bardez Taluka Truck Owners Association has taken a strong stand against the Regional Transport Office (RTO) practice of registering vehicles based on rent agreements. At a recent meeting in Pernem, which saw the participation of around 600 truck owners, the association raised serious concerns, alleging misuse of this process by outsiders. According to the association, non-local individuals and businesses are exploiting this rule to get their vehicles registered in Goa, even though they are not actual residents. The truckers claim that this loophole is being used by these outsiders to run illegal transport businesses in the state, which severely impacts the livelihood of genuine Goan operators.
Members of the association highlighted that registering vehicles based on rent agreements has become a major avenue for circumventing existing regulations. This, they argue, not only fosters unfair competition but also places local truck owners at a disadvantage, as outsiders often enter the transport business without adhering to proper norms or paying the dues required of local operators. The truckers urged the RTO to implement stricter verification measures and to disallow vehicle registrations that rely solely on rent agreements as proof of address. They insisted that only those with valid, permanent proof of Goan residence should be eligible for such registrations.
The meeting concluded with a collective plea for authorities to take immediate action. The truck owners stressed that unless the loophole is closed, the influx of vehicles registered through rent agreements will continue to affect the transport sector in North Goa adversely. They have also warned of potential protests if their demands are not met, underscoring the growing tension on the ground. The association reiterated its commitment to protecting the interests of local truckers and ensuring that the benefits of the sector remain with genuine Goan transporters.
