Goan Cashew to Receive GI Tag by Year-End, Says MLA – A Boost for Authentic Local Produce

In a significant move aimed at preserving local heritage and protecting farmers, a Geographic Indication (GI) tag will soon be granted to Goa’s famous cashew nuts, giving them a distinct identity in the global market. The announcement was made by Deviya Rane MLA, who confirmed that the process is expected to be completed by the end of this year.

The GI tag will not only help safeguard the authenticity of Goan cashew but also prevent the mislabeling and sale of non-Goan varieties as local produce. Once granted, this certification will legally recognize the unique quality, flavor, and origin of cashew nuts grown in the region — a step that many believe is long overdue.

“By the end of 2025, Goa’s cashew will receive its rightful GI tag. This will offer it a unique branding and help curb the growing trend of non-Goan cashews being sold as Goan,” the MLA said, highlighting the impact on both farmers and consumers.

The GI tag is expected to improve market value, promote exports, and support local farmers who have long relied on cashew cultivation as a vital part of Goa’s agricultural economy.

Local producers and industry stakeholders have welcomed the move, seeing it as a game-changer for boosting the credibility and demand for Goan cashew in both domestic and international markets.
