PANJIM: Social activists along with locals on Sunday slammed the authorities for allowing the cutting of trees at property near the Governor's residence at Dona Paula.
The activists and locals held a protest carrying banners which read ‘Stop Goa’s Destruction’, ‘Goa’s nature, Goa’s future’ and ‘Stop Illegal Conversions’.
Francis Coelho said, “Many trees have been cut despite the fact that this area is eco-sensitive. If we wish to cut a single tree, we have to seek 10 permissions from the Forest Department, but here nobody is ready to show the permissions obtained from the authorities."
Locals claimed that those who come for cutting trees do not reveal the name of the person who sent them for cutting trees.
They said a lot of deforestation has taken place in the area despite the fact that no development work can be taken out there.
Social activist Cecille Rodrigues pointed out that the trees have been cut despite there being a bungalow of the Forest Minister in the area.
“We have a forest minister staying here, but the trees are being cut. What is the point of him being here?,” she said.
Tanoj Adwalpalkar, another social activist, said, “In September this year, 216 trees were cut. If this is the rate at which trees are being cut, then imagine how many trees are being cut annually. Dona Paula has been destroyed in the name of development. It has been done for the rich at the cost of poor, who have been residing here for generations. The plan is to drive away locals.”
Jack Sukhija, TTAG president said, “The Governor has said that this area is a no development area. This should be maintained to keep the beauty of the area. We thank everyone for taking up the issue. We support them.”
