Goa Ministers Assure No Mall Development at Old Goa Heritage Site, Commit to Preservation

Goa's Tourism Minister Rohan Khaunte has clarified that the Old Goa heritage site will not be developed into a mall, refuting reports to the contrary. He assured the public that the government has no intention of commercializing the historical area.

Khaunte also announced that the Tourism Department will engage in discussions with the Old Goa Church Authority to preserve and protect the site's heritage. This move aims to ensure the site’s historical integrity while considering sustainable tourism development, addressing concerns raised by locals and heritage advocates about potential threats to the site’s cultural significance.

Minister Vishwajit Rane has firmly stated that no construction will be permitted within the buffer zone of the Heritage site at Old Goa. He clarified that the Town and Country Planning (TCP) department has not granted any permissions for development in the area and that strict action will be taken against any illegal tree cutting. Rane also explained that the only exception was for specific works related to the exposition of the Sacred Relics of Saint Francis Xavier within the church premises.

He emphasized that no development will take place within 100 meters of the protected site and called for an inquiry if trees have been cut without permission. Rane urged protesters to verify the facts before taking further action, reinforcing his commitment to protecting the heritage site.
