MARGAO: Goan Seamen Association of India (GSAI) called on stakeholders to prioritise the protection of seafarers in every possible way on the occasion of World Maritime Day.
They emphasized the importance of providing comprehensive insurance for all seafarers, ensuring their safety and well-being at sea. The association highlighted the unique challenges faced by those in the maritime industry and need for stronger support systems.
At a function held at the GSAI office in Fatorda, a souvenir was unveiled by Dixon Vas, the founder President of GSAI and Sarpanch of Cavelossim village panchayat. The event celebrated contributions of seafarers and highlighted importance of maritime safety.
Addressing the gathering, Frank Viegas, President of GSAI, urged stakeholders to take immediate action to protect seafarers and emphasised that the Directorate General of Shipping should address their demands, who have their Seafarers Identity Document (SID).
“Seafarers should have insurance at all times. Everyone must be connected to an insurance plan, as unforeseen events can occur during their vacations, leaving them without safety benefits. This coverage is essential not only for their protection but also for the peace of mind of their families. Ensuring that seafarers are insured will provide crucial support in times of need,” Viegas stated.
Dixon Vas remarked that there is still much work to be done by the association, emphasizing the importance of perseverance. “Governments may change, but we must remain focused on getting our work done,” he stated.
