Hands-On Farm Visit Deepens Students’ Understanding of Agriculture in Mandrem

In line with the National Education Policy’s emphasis on experiential and practical learning, students from Mandrem High School visited a farm in Junaswada, Mandrem, on Saturday to gain firsthand insights into agriculture. The educational trip aimed to bridge the gap between classroom theory and real-world practice by immersing students in the daily activities and techniques involved in farming.

Accompanied by a team of teachers, the students were warmly received by local farmers who introduced them to the vital role agriculture plays in Goa’s rural economy. The day began with a demonstration of basic farming tools and equipment used for plowing, sowing, and irrigation. Students were encouraged to handle the tools themselves, giving them a tangible understanding of the labor and precision that agriculture demands.

A key highlight of the visit was a hands-on session where students participated in sowing seeds and preparing irrigation channels. Under the guidance of both teachers and farming experts, they also learned about the selection and use of fertilizers. Discussions focused on the importance of soil health, the risks of chemical overuse, and the advantages of organic alternatives.

Throughout the day, students were prompted to ask questions and reflect on broader issues such as sustainability, food security, and the evolving role of technology in modern agriculture. Many expressed a deepened appreciation for farmers and a greater awareness of agriculture’s significance.

The school management emphasized that such field visits will continue to be a regular part of the curriculum, fostering curiosity, respect for traditional knowledge, and a practical understanding of key sectors like farming. Also not to forget that the initiative supports the education policy’s vision of holistic learning and may even inspire some students to pursue careers or innovations in agriculture.
