HC Closes Noise Pollution Contempt Case; GSPCB to Enforce Decibel Limit Boards at Open-Air Venues

The High Court of Bombay at Goa has disposed of a contempt petition related to noise pollution, while directing the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to implement stricter measures for open-air music venues.

As per the court’s directive, all open-air establishments that play music will now be required to prominently display boards indicating the permissible decibel limits. The move aims to raise awareness among venue operators and the public regarding acceptable sound levels.

GSPCB has been tasked with ensuring compliance and has been empowered to impose penalties on violators who exceed the stipulated noise thresholds. The court’s decision is expected to bring tighter enforcement in Goa’s tourism and nightlife sectors, which have faced ongoing complaints over excessive noise.

The High Court’s order comes as part of ongoing efforts to balance entertainment with public health and environmental concerns, particularly in residential and eco-sensitive zones.
