HC Sets Six-Week Ultimatum for Panchayats, Municipalities on Illegal Constructions: AG Pangam

The High Court has issued a firm directive, granting a final six-week extension to all Panchayats and Municipalities for submitting their compliance reports on actions taken against illegal constructions. Advocate General Devidas Pangam, representing the state, stated that the court has made it absolutely clear—this is the last opportunity for local bodies to fulfill their legal obligations.

The court emphasized that no further extensions will be granted. Local bodies must use this period to compile and submit comprehensive reports detailing the steps taken to identify, address, and prevent unauthorized constructions within their respective jurisdictions.

This strong judicial stance underscores the seriousness of the matter and the court’s expectation of accountability from Panchayats and Municipalities. Failure to comply within the stipulated time could lead to legal consequences, including contempt proceedings against defaulting authorities.

The next hearing is scheduled for August 18, by which time all compliance reports are expected to be on record for judicial review.

Commenting on the directive, Advocate General Pangam stated, “The court has said that this is the final opportunity to file the compliance report.” His statement highlights the urgency and responsibility placed on local bodies to act decisively and transparently.

This development significantly raises the pressure on local governance structures to demonstrate effective enforcement and adherence to legal standards. The August 18 hearing is expected to set a precedent for how such issues will be handled going forward, reinforcing the judiciary’s commitment to lawful and accountable urban planning.
